When to visit

You can visit Thailand all year round, but the best time to travel is during the cooler, dry season between November and early April. Essentially, there are three main seasons: rainy (May to October), cool (November to February) and hot (March to May). The climate can vary in different parts of the country however, with the north much cooler, especially in the jungle regions, while the western and southern isles get much warmer.

Experiences

Life moves at a different pace in the lush surrounds of northern Thai provinces Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Here you will find pristine rainforests, mystical mountains, serene temples, and river floodplains. At 35 acres and with over 8,000 stalls, Bangkok’s Chatuchak weekend market is a mind-boggling proposition for firsttimers. Persevere and you will come across just about anything you could hope to find, from housewares and handicrafts to vintage clothes and street food. Traditional Thai massage was first practiced by monks 2,500 years ago, and uniquely involves compression, rocking and about as much stretching as you might get from a typical yoga class. You can become a practitioner yourself with a short course at the many massage schools in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai or Koh Phangan. The abundant coral reefs of tiny Koh Tao have made it a leading dive centre with many dive schools, and one of the most affordable options anywhere to become PADI accredited.

Areas of Thailand

Bangkok: The vibrant capital of Thailand is a non-stop whirlwind of entertainment, excitement, sights and sounds, and no visit to the country is complete without soaking up the atmosphere in Bangkok. Its pulsating nightlife and vibrant markets reflect the Thai's determination to enjoy life to the fullest. Steeped in tradition and history, Bangkok lies on a bend in the Chao Phraya River and possesses an amazing combination of temples and palaces, enticing sights, smells and sounds, glitz and glamour, wonderful hospitality and enchantment and excitement at every turn. Haggling at the street markets, eating at hawker stalls and taking tuk tuk rides are must dos.

Hua Hin: Once a quiet fishing village, Hua Hin grew into a fashionable escape for residents of Bangkok after the 1920s, when the Thai royal family built summer palaces here. Today it is still a favourite getaway of the Thai royal family, nobility and upper echelons of Thai society. Hua Hin today is an ideal destination where both couples and families can enjoy a quiet holiday and it is just a three-hour drive from Bangkok. Visitors can enjoy snorkelling, swimming, golf, spas, caves, peaks, waterfalls and nearby national parks.

Pattaya Beach: Located on a wide bay on Thailand’s east coast, Pattaya was once a sleepy little fishing village, but has now been transformed into an exciting resort town offering excellent hotels and superb beaches. A mere two-hour drive from Bangkok, it is a vibrant hub of entertainment and activity. It is literally where east meets west, both in colour and character. When daylight fades, the night comes alive at dozens of spectacular clubs, restaurants and lounges. In recent years, Pattaya has reinvented itself as a more family-friendly destination.

Koi Samui Beach: Just an hour’s flight from the teeming streets of Bangkok lies the peaceful island of Koh Samui, the third largest of a group of nearly 100 beautiful islands. A tropical paradise with a mountainous green interior, long pristine palm-fringed beaches, colourful coral reefs, warm sheltered seas, quaint local villages, coconut plantations and easy-going people with a ready smile; it is one of Thailand’s most romantic destinations.

Phuket: Thailand’s playground is the country’s largest island and is located approximately 860 kilometres south of Bangkok. Phuket, the ‘Pearl of the Andaman Sea’ has retained a distinctive culture, where the fusion of Chinese and Portuguese influences have combined with the traditions of the Chao Naam, the indigenous sea-faring people. Phuket has become one of the region’s most sought after holiday destinations with something for everyone from beaches with abundant watersports, great hiking in the forest-clad hills, to flavoursome Thai cuisine, authentic Thai spas and lively night entertainment. Ideal for families, couples and watersport enthusiasts, the island is rife with fun activities, romantic experiences, shopping outlets and delicious dining.
