When to visit
The island is visited by two separate monsoon seasons, which can mean different conditions across the island throughout the year. The main south-west monsoon brings some rain to the west and south-west and hill country from April to September, while the milder north-east monsoon increases rainfall on the east coast from November to December. In the central highlands, summers are hot and winters mild. The most popular travel season is December to March.
Experiences
With its attractive coastline, timeless ruins, awesome animals and flavourful food experiences, there’s plenty to attract visitors young and old to Sri Lanka. Adults and kids alike will love the wild experience of a safari at Yala or Udawulawe National Parks, where leopards, elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears can be seen. There’s also whale watching, rafting, surfing and a host of family friendly beaches. Whales and dolphins are regularly drawn to the waters around Trincomalee, Mirissa or Kalpitiya. The evocative ruins of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are both ancient seats of kings that house archaeological and architectural wonders. The stretch of railway between Kandy and Ella is incredibly picturesque. The train rattles through a rolling landscape of farms overlooked by mountains, small villages and vast tea plantations. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a jewel amongst Sri Lanka’s many treasures. Be enchanted by the famous painted frescoes amidst the wilderness of the ancient ruins. Visit a traditional Ayurvedic Spa for a range of herbal treatments which aim to create harmony within the body.

Areas of Sri Lanka
Colombo: Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city and capital is a city with a great mixture of modern life, contemporary architecture, colonial buildings and temples which have given it a distinctly different atmosphere from the rest of the country. A thriving spice port for centuries, it was invaded many times. Today many new large scale projects have brought a lot of modernity to this exotic and vibrant city.
Kalutara and Wadduwa: Located on the southwest coast, these resorts are the closest to Colombo Airport. They have a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere and a generous helping of authentic Sri Lankan culture. The beaches are picturesque with lines of coconut palms that seem to go on forever in both directions. Wadduwa enjoys a beautiful location where the Kalu Ganga River estuary meets the Indian Ocean in a huge lagoon and canoeing is a popular activity here. Wadduwa is known for its rich cultivation of coconut palms and for the products made from coconut. There are few historical places in the area such as ancient Buddhist temples. Kalutara’s soft sandy beaches, the palm plantations and the abundant Buddhist Dagabas are Kalutara’s main attractions. There are plenty of things to do in Kalutara, visit the ‘Madu Ganga’ on a river safari, take a trip to the local fish market or visit some of the historical place like Kalutara Viharaya, Kalutara Bodhiya, Richmond Castle and Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple.
Bentota and Galle: The resorts of Bentota is famed as the prime beach resorts of the southern coastal belt. Its calm seas during the season from November to April make it ideal for swimming, snorkelling, diving, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and deep-sea fishing. The romantic ancient town of Galle is remarkable due to its extensive maritime history, international trading links and colonial domination, which led to a diverse ethnic composition. The magnificent Dutch fort which is a UNESCO World heritage Site, is the town’s most popular attraction. Today the fort area is lively with quaint boutique shops, art galleries and cafés.
Weligama, Tangalle and Hambantota: These three beach resorts offer a great variety of activities. Weligama is an interesting blend of international beach resorts and a lively fishing town. The name Weligama means ‘Sandy Village’ and the loveliest stretch of the bay beach is around the island of Taprobane. During your stay see the famous stilt fishermen perched on a crossbar fixed on a single pole planted into the sea-bed. Situated on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, the palm fringed bay and picturesque coves of Tangalle are a natural treasure. Tangalle is an ideal location for surfing, whale watching and diving. During your stay here canoe on the Rekawa Lagoon to explore the mangrove and see the local fauna. Further East, Hambantota is an area that offers a blend of natural beauty, historic colonial architecture, wildlife, vast salt flats and heritage sites including Dagobas and Viharas. During your stay enjoy leopard spotting at Yala National Park, birdwatching at Bundala National Park and a boat ride on the Walawe River.
