Introduction
The Euro powerhouse of Germany makes plenty of grand natural and architectural statements but is sprinkled throughout its great land with provincial charms. When to visit
Germany’s temperate climate brings pleasant warm summers and cold winters, but not to extremes; winter’s average temperature is 3℃, increasing to 22℃ in the summer. The country’s south west is the warmest part, whilst some rainfall can be expected throughout the year. From May to September is the most popular time to visit, but winter also brings with it the prospect of cosy festive markets and skiing.
Experiences
From North Sea sand dunes to its epic green interior and the sublime splendour of its southern Alps, Germany’s landscape revels in the same diversity that’s shared by its major cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Düsseldorf. The proliferation of natural thermal waters has encouraged a long German tradition of spas and health resorts in stunning locations. Check yourself into one of the country’s 350 approved wellness resorts or enjoy a stay at one of the many countryside retreats of Baden Baden, GarmischPartenkirchen or Berchtesgaden. Until quite recently, Berlin was a city divided by a wall between East and West. Now it revels as a free-spirited beacon of unification, as well as being one of Europe’s edgiest centres of culture, with many former Eastern Bloc buildings being transformed into über-cool restaurants, galleries and nightclubs. Almost impossibly romantic in its mountaintop setting, Schloss Neuschwanstein has long been the inspiration for every screen depiction of the ‘fairy-tale’ castle, from Disney onwards. Take a cruise down the Rhine, drifting past medieval villages, historic castles and sensational vistas.

Areas of Germany
Munich: Munich has a well-deserved reputation as an elegant and sophisticated city. Home to the 1972 Summer Olympic Games, this modern and cosmopolitan city combines the high culture of opera, art and museums with the simpler pleasures of oompah bands and the Oktoberfest, a celebratory cornucopia of food, drink and friendliness. Situated just north of the Alps, Bavaria’s charming capital lies conveniently at the crossroads of Europe bordering Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Munich is a great starting point for touring within Germany or even Austria and Switzerland.
Düsseldorf: Düsseldorf is an attractive, multicultural city situated on the banks of the Rhine. At its heart lies the historic Old Town, a maze of narrow streets lined with tall town houses, intimate cafés, busy taverns and smart shops. With its chic, exclusive shops and couture shows held throughout the year, the shopping is excellent and the city is rightly known as the fashion capital of Germany.
Hamburg: Hamburg, situated on the River Elbe with its spectacular riverside scenery and over 2,000 bridges, is a city of magnificent promenades, parks and charming shopping malls. The harbour is famed for entertainment and sightseeing cruises. Alster Lake in the heart of Hamburg town offers sailing and boating.
Frankfurt: Standing on the banks of the River Main, Frankfurt is a modern city and Europe’s prime financial centre. Frankfurt has grown a particular fondness for museums that vary greatly in terms of size, style and area of interest. Known for its spectacular skyline nicknamed ‘Mainhattan’, you can still catch glimpses of its medieval roots in cobbled alleys and quaint squares.
Europa-Park: Located in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Europa-Park stands out as Germany’s largest theme park and one of the most celebrated in Europe. Renowned for its vast scale and imaginative design, the park welcomes over six million annual guests to experience more than 100 attractions and rides, including 14 roller coasters. Spread across 20 themed areas dedicated mainly to European countries, the atmosphere is both cosmopolitan and playful, transporting visitors through re-creations of national architecture, cuisine, and thrill rides.
