Introduction

When to visit
Temperatures can rise to 30℃ during the summer months, and drop below zero in mid-winter. Summer also brings a higher chance of rainfall. Spring and autumn are the most attractive time to visit, with blossom forming in May and autumnal changes happening from September.

Everything starts with Prague, such is its enduring appeal as one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities, with the view of its 14th century Charles Bridge crossing the Vltava River, surrounded by castle ramparts and cathedral spires, apparently frozen in time for half a millennium. Its maze of cobbled lanes and courtyards is a wonder to the casual wanderer, and beckons you on past ancient chapels, hidden gardens, tiny cafés and oldfashioned lounges where tourists are scarce. For a change of pace, head to picturesque Český Krumlov in South Bohemia, often described as a ‘mini Prague’. With its stunning ‘fairy-tale’ castle, it’s as beautiful in the summer as it is magical in the winter. Local folk culture still thrives in South Bohemia, where communities don traditional dress and partake in heritage song and dance celebrations during the summer festival season. Numerous thermal springs have made Karlovy Vary a popular wellness destination since the 19th century. Visitors are to be found sipping on the supposedly health-restoring sulphurous waters from spouted ceramic drinking cups.
