The centre of Rome is compact, and wandering the ruins on foot is a great way to see the city. Street life is vibrant and constant. The architectural design is consuming, and close proximity of ancient sights make for a comfortable and convenient walk. For instance, the Colosseum is approximately one-and-a-half miles from the Spanish steps.
One route travels by the Forum, Piazza Venezia, and several churches, passing through charming neighbourhoods. A longer, more scenic route weaves from the Colosseum to the Vatican. Most major monuments are west of the train station. The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are a short detour away. The Palatine Hill and the Forum are the centre of ancient Rome. Via del Corso runs north from the Forum to Piazza del Popola, and Trevi Fountain is to the east. The Vatican is northwest of the Forum, across the Tiber River. Here you’ll find ruins incorporated into modern structures, piazzas filled with remnants of 2,000-year-old temples, cobblestones that date back thousands of years. Other ancient cities may have plenty of cultural heritage on display, but in Rome it is so integrated in city, that you will experience it at every turn. It also has within the smallest state, The Vatican City, containing religious sites like the St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum and is where one can see the Pope hold an audience in St. Peter’s Square each Wednesday morning. You have to taste Rome’s famous dishes, at any of the traditional trattorias. Suggested dishes are pasta, roman-style pizza, fried zucchini flowers and of course end with a delicious gelato!
