Discover Marseille, the sunniest french city, and the "oldest city in France" and indeed one of the oldest in Western Europe. The city was founded as Massalia in around 600 BC, and soon developed into an important port in the ancient Greek world.
Located near the mouth of the Rhone - the greatest natural corridor between the Mediterranean and the lands to the north, it has long been one of the most important ports in France. Marseilles has managed to maintain its status as one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean, and develop as a tourist destination at the same time. The port is in fact the Heart of the city, and an essential place to visit to soak up the atmosphere of its fish market and its lively quaysides. One can also taste the famous local speciality, the bouillabaisse (fish soup). La Canebière, the histroric high street in the old quarter is also very popular. The Panier district is one of the most picturesque districts, where one finds old little shops with beautifully decorated facades.
