Málaga is one of southern Spain’s most welcoming cities, and it more than justifies a visit. Loaded with history and youthful vigour, it has become a thoroughly chic city, boasting exquisite architecture, sunny beaches, stunning botanical gardens, fabulous cuisine and a culturally dynamic art district.
This city of about 550,000 people is a pleasant port, with ancient streets and lovely villas amid exotic foliage. Food and wine enthusiasts are well catered for in Malaga. Stroll down the marble-paved streets, you’ll find the traditional tapas bars, Local highlights include seafood, traditional gazpacho soup, red mullet and delicious sardines, as well as local wine served directly from the barrel. Come here for tapas washed down with sweet local wine. Flamenco, the flamboyant traditional dance originated in the area almost 500 years ago, embodies the spirit of Málaga. This is the city where you can witness an ancient tradition in its purest, most passionate form. Málaga is also home to some seriously impressive botanical gardens and parks. Two, in particular, are worth visiting: Jardín Botánico de la Concepción. Around La Alameda boulevard, with its giant weeping fig trees, is old-town Málaga: elegant squares, pedestrian shopping streets and to the east lies the Soho district, a vibrant cultural hub with galleries and up-and-coming restaurants. Malagueños know how to party and most good nights out end with ‘churros’ for breakfast. You can literally feel the city come alive as the sun sets, and nights out in the city can either be relaxing and laid-back or very loud, intense and a little crazy. You can find most of the clubs in the old town or along the coast, or on some very chic rooftops with live music and awe-inspiring views.
