Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China, is also its economic, political, and cultural centre. Visited by over 4 million international tourists per year, this 3000+ year old city spent 850 years as capital city among three other Great Ancient Capitals of China – Xi'an, Luoyang, and Nanjing.
One must-see in Beijing, or rather, one of China’s top sites, is the Great Wall which was built to defend the country from invasions coming from the north, built and in service from the 5th century BC to the 16th century AD. The city also hosts the magnificent Forbidden City – the largest palace complex in the world today housing a museum with majestic displays of Chinese art.
Typical houses embody the Chinese belief where man and nature are in unity, and architecture in Beijing is even appreciated in the more than 7000 typical old streets known as Hutong, each with their own history.
