Tunis, which became the capital city of Tunisia in the 11th century after the fall of Carthage, was originally a small Berber city. Tunis boasts architectural wonders within its medina, its mosques, its palaces, and monuments, however it is also a modern growing metropolis. In the modern quarter, architecture is of a more Art Nouveau or Art Deco style, and residents and visitors alike enjoy the cafes, theatres, and tramways. One can also visit Lake Tunis, a natural lagoon formed between the city and the Gulf of Tunis.

Shopping in Tunis includes shopping centres with international brands, designer boutiques, and artisanal creations as well as the souks which are rich with trade and crafts including embroidered clothing, food, jewellery, fabric, perfumes, and chéchia – hats typical of Tunis. The area is also rich with archaeological sites and attractions such as the Kheireddine Palace, the Byzantine-Moorish style cathedral, and Belvedere park. Cuisine in Tunis varies from the traditional lablabi (a spicy chickpea soup) to marqa h’loua (a sweet and savoury lamb stew), to modern fares such as sushi and steak.
